Before your first lesson

Three steps to get on the road.

Texas asks for a learner license before any lesson behind the wheel. Here is the short path to your first lesson.

01

Ages 18 to 24: take the 6-hour course

First-time drivers 18 to 24 must finish the 6-hour adult course. It is online and costs $75.

02

Get your learner license

Apply at a DPS driver license office. Bring the card, or the temporary paper copy, to every lesson.

03

Book your lessons

Book online or call us. Your first lesson starts somewhere quiet, then moves to busier streets as you are ready.

How we teach

Behind the wheel lessons for adults, in three phases.

You stay in each phase until you have control of the car, not until a set number of hours has passed.

Phase 1

Vehicle control

  • Mirrors, blind spots and the width of the car
  • Smooth braking, acceleration and steering
  • Turns in quiet neighborhoods
  • Stall parking and parallel parking
Phase 2

Traffic

  • Lane changes on surface streets
  • Protected and unprotected left turns
  • Right of way at four-way stops
  • Frontage roads, when you are ready
Phase 3

Road test prep

  • A mock road test scored the way the examiner scores it
  • Straight-line backing and parallel parking
  • The three parts of the Texas test: on-street driving, backing, parallel parking
Highway driving is not part of the Texas road test. We add I-20 or Highway 360 practice when you ask for it and when your instructor sees you are ready.

Anxious about driving?

Driving lessons for nervous adult drivers.

Maybe you have put off driving for years, or a family member tried to teach you and it did not go well. That is okay. Here is what changes when a patient professional teaches you.

  • An instructor brake on the passenger side. If something goes wrong, the instructor stops the car.
  • A quiet start. Your first lesson starts somewhere quiet, then moves to busier streets as you are ready.
  • Your say. If something feels like too much, tell us and we slow down.
  • Clear explanations. You learn why each step matters, not only what to do.
  • A female instructor if that makes you more comfortable.

“I was so nervous getting behind the wheel, but Mohammad instantly made me feel at ease with his kind demeanor and steady encouragement. Amazingly, he taught me how to drive in just two lessons. … he breaks everything down so clearly and makes sure you truly understand not just what to do, but why you’re doing it.”

Amber W., Google review, 2025

“It was my first time sitting in the driving seat of a car and what I appreciated most was how encouraging the instructor was and how much confidence I gained with each lesson. I never felt rushed or pressured. I passed my driving test, and I truly couldn’t have asked for a better experience.”

Jyoti B., Google review, 2026

On request

Female driving instructor available.

Ask for a female driving instructor when you book online or by phone. The lesson, the car and the price are the same.

“Shahana was my trainer, and she was incredibly patient, professional, and supportive throughout the lessons. She explained everything clearly, made me feel confident behind the wheel, and ensured I was fully prepared for the driving test. Mohammed, the owner, was also very helpful and accommodating with scheduling, he conducted my driving test.”

Sharanya N., Google review, 2025

International drivers

New to the US or driving on a foreign license?

If you already drive, your lessons focus on the Texas rules and road layouts that catch new residents out, and on the road test format.

  • Frontage roads and U-turn lanes along I-20 and Highway 360
  • Right turn on red and when it is not allowed
  • Four-way stops and who goes first
  • Stopping for school buses, in both directions on most roads
  • Parallel parking and straight-line backing, scored separately on the test

Most new Texas residents with a license from another country take the DPS knowledge and road tests. DPS decides what you need, so check dps.texas.gov or ask us. We regularly help UTA students and drivers who are new to the US, and lessons can be taught in Spanish.

“as it’s my first time to drive here in the state of Texas I don’t have confident at first to drive, but now that I finish my lesson it’s now easy and have my license right and then…excellent!”

Mitchie V., Google review, 2025

“Got my drivers license on the first try during my 6 lesson course. Amazing teacher and great teaching technique. He will correct you if you make a mistake and help you fix your mistakes to avoid future problems.”

Brissia G., Google review, 2026

Is pickup and drop-off free?
Pickup and drop-off is free within 5 miles of our office at 1030 W Arkansas Ln (the UTA campus is within this) and $15 beyond 5 miles, inside Arlington only. If you live outside Arlington, your lesson starts at our office.

Often, yes, when a test slot is open. The single-visit option is $175: a 1-hour warm-up lesson, then the official road test in the car you just practiced in.
