Our TDLR-approved 24-hour Texas online drivers ed course costs $99, and your teen can start it at 14, at home, at their own pace. The written permit test is included, so once your teen is 15 and has finished the first 6 hours, they can work toward the learner license.
From 14 to 16
The online course is the first step. Here is how the rest of the path fits around it, so nothing catches you by surprise.
Log in and work through the 24 hours at home, on any device.
Once your teen is 15 and has the first 6 hours done, they can take the written permit test inside the course.
Bring the DE-964 (the drivers ed certificate), a VOE form (school attendance form) and identity documents to a DPS office.
Complete the remaining 18 hours while practicing with a parent.
7 hours driving and 7 observing with our instructor in Teen Behind the Wheel ($440).
After 6 months on the learner license and the required ITTD course (Impact Texas Teen Drivers, $30 from us), your teen can test at our academy from $75.
Inside the 24 hours
How it works, hour by hour
The course is 24 hours, the minimum Texas sets for teens. It is self-paced, so your teen can spread the hours out around school.
The first 6 hours cover what Texas wants a new driver to know before a learner license: traffic laws, signs, signals and pavement markings.
After those 6 hours, and once your teen is 15, the course gives the written permit test online. It has 30 questions and your teen needs 21 correct (70%) to pass. Then your teen brings the DE-964 certificate, a VOE form (the school attendance form) and ID documents to a DPS office, takes the vision test there, and gets the learner license card.
The remaining 18 hours go deeper: defensive driving, sharing the road, alcohol and distraction, and the rules for new drivers. Your teen can finish these while already practicing in the car.
That is fine. Your teen keeps working through the course and takes the permit test after turning 15.
At 15 and at 16
Your teen can drive only with a licensed driver who is at least 21, has at least one year of driving experience, and sits in the front seat. No phone use while driving, even hands-free. The learner license must be held at least 6 months before the road test.
After the road test, the provisional license that follows means no driving from midnight to 5 AM except for work, school or a medical emergency, only one passenger under 21 who is not family, and no phone use.
The provisional limits end at 18.
What the $99 includes
One price, $99, for the whole 24-hour classroom phase.
Meets Texas requirements for the teen classroom phase.
Your teen takes the written permit test inside the course, so there is no separate DPS trip just for the written exam.
A DE-964 is issued after the first 6 hours so your teen can apply for the learner license, and a final DE-964 when the full program is done, for the road test.
Short interactive lessons that keep teens working.
Add Teen Behind the Wheel ($440) for the 14 hours in the car with our instructor.
Ask your insurer whether it discounts completed driver education.
