Course content

What the adult driver education course covers.

You will learn the rules the DPS knowledge test asks about and the habits the road test examiner looks for. It is all explained in plain language, one short module at a time.

  • Texas traffic laws: speed limits, right of way, school zones, school buses and emergency vehicles
  • Signs, signals and pavement markings, including frontage roads and turn lanes
  • Alcohol, drugs and driving, and what a DWI means for a new license
  • Distracted driving and the Texas wireless device rules
  • Sharing the road with pedestrians, cyclists, motorcycles and trucks
About the final exam: the course ends with an exam. Pass it and you receive your ADE-1317 certificate. Bring it to DPS when you apply for your learner license, because the course exam can count as your knowledge test.

The course is reading and video only. Time behind the wheel is separate, and you can add it whenever you are ready.

Questions, answered

6-hour adult course questions.

Still have a question?(469) 550-1743Call us now
Who has to take the 6 hour driving course in Texas?
First-time license applicants ages 18 to 24 must finish a state-approved adult driver education course, usually 6 hours, before Texas will issue a license. At 25 and older the course is optional. Drivers under 18 take the teen drivers ed course instead.
Can I take the 6-hour adult course online?
Yes. Our TDLR-approved course is online, costs $75, and runs at your own pace on a phone or computer. You do not need a learner license to start it.
Does the course replace the DPS written test?
The final exam in a state-approved adult course can count as your knowledge test, so bring your ADE-1317 certificate to DPS when you apply for your learner license. DPS still gives the vision test.
Do adults have to hold a learner license for 6 months?
No. The 6-month holding period applies to drivers under 18. Adults can take the road test once they have a learner license, the course certificate if they are 18 to 24, and an Impact Texas Adult Drivers certificate dated within 90 days.
What is Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITAD)?
It is the required Impact Texas Adult Drivers course about distracted driving. Every new adult driver completes it before the road test. You can buy it from us for $30. The certificate must be dated within 90 days of your test, so finish it close to your test date.
Is the 6-hour course the same as behind-the-wheel lessons?
No. The course covers Texas law, signs and safe driving habits. Driving practice is separate. Once you have your learner license, you can book private driving lessons at $70 an hour, with a 2-lesson minimum.
Can I take my road test with you after the course?
Yes. We are a DPS-authorized third party road test site, which means the official DPS road test is given right here. It is $75 in your own car or $100 in ours, by appointment seven days a week, and same-day slots are often available when there is an opening. See road test details.
Is this course state approved?
Yes. Arlington Driving Academy is licensed by TDLR as driving school #C3511. You can confirm it on the TDLR school search.
