How it works

What a third party driving test is, and why it counts.

A third party driving test, also called a 3rd party driving test, is the official DPS road test given at an approved school. Texas DPS licenses certain driving schools to give the Class C road test on its behalf. This is the Third Party Skills Testing program. The examiner follows the DPS scoring rules, and a passing result is accepted at any Texas driver license office.

The difference is scheduling and support. DPS road test openings depend on the DPS scheduler. Here you choose a time seven days a week, test from our Arlington office, and can add a practice lesson in the same car right before the exam.

What we do not do: issue the license itself. After you pass, you finish at a DPS driver license office (photo, fee, card). Book that visit at txdpsscheduler.com.

Licensed in another country? If you are moving to Texas from outside the U.S., you usually need both the knowledge test and the road test, and you can take the road test with us. Drivers transferring a valid license from another U.S. state usually do not need a road test; check with DPS first.
Testing in your own car? It must be insured and registered, with working brake lights, turn signals, horn and seat belts, no windshield damage that blocks your view, and safe tires, mirrors and doors. Prefer to skip the check? Rent our car for $25 more.

How the test is scored

How many mistakes are allowed on the driving test in Texas?

The Class C road test has three parts, and each one is scored on its own. Going over the limit on any one part fails the whole test. These limits come from 37 Tex. Admin. Code §15.56.

Test partYou fail withWhat is scored
On-street drivingMore than 30 pointsStarting, stopping, turns, lane changes, signals, right of way, speed
BackingMore than 5 pointsReversing in a straight line under control, looking back over your shoulder
Parallel parkingMore than 7 pointsParking between the standards and pulling out with a signal and traffic check
Point deductions, not automatic fails: missed head checks, late signals, wide or rough turns, stopping past the line, and drifting in the lane each cost points. A few of them add up quickly, which is why a practice road test helps.

Still have a question?(469) 550-1743Call us now
Does a third party driving test count the same as a test at DPS?
Yes. Arlington Driving Academy is approved by Texas DPS as a Third Party Skills Testing site. The examiner gives the official Class C road test, scored on the same state standards, and DPS accepts the passing result for your license.
How many mistakes are allowed on the driving test in Texas?
The road test has three separately scored parts. You fail if more than 30 points are deducted on the on-street drive, more than 5 on backing, or more than 7 on parallel parking (37 Tex. Admin. Code §15.56). Some mistakes, such as hitting an object, a traffic violation, or a wheel over the curb, end the test right away.
Is parallel parking on the driving test in Texas?
Yes. Parallel parking is one of the three scored parts of the Texas road test, along with backing and the on-street drive. Touching or going past the parking standards is an immediate fail, and more than 7 points deducted fails that part.
Can I rent a car for my road test?
Yes. The Road Test + Vehicle Rental package is $100 and you test in our insured school car, so you do not need to bring a car, insurance card or registration. It is $25 more than testing in your own car.
What do I need to bring to my Texas road test?
Bring your learner license. Teens also bring the DE-964 certificate, an Impact Texas Teen Drivers certificate dated within 90 days and the VOE form. Adults bring an Impact Texas Adult Drivers certificate dated within 90 days, and the ADE-1317 or DE-964 certificate if they are 18 to 24. If you test in your own car, bring its insurance and registration.
Do adults need to hold a learner license for 6 months before the road test?
No. The 6-month holding period applies to drivers under 18. Adults 18 and older need a learner license and the required certificates, but there is no waiting period before the road test.
Can I take my road test the same day I book?
Often, yes. Same-day appointments are available when slots are open. Book online to see current openings or call (469) 550-1743.
Do you give road tests on Saturday?
Yes. Road tests run seven days a week by appointment, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
What happens after I pass?
You leave with your passing results. Take them to a Texas DPS driver license office to finish your license. You can book that visit at txdpsscheduler.com.
