How drivers education works in Arlington, TX.

Texas teens get licensed in a set order, and the learner license has to be held for at least 6 months before the road test. Here is each step, in plain words, so you always know what comes next.

01

Start the 24-hour course

Online, at your own pace, from age 14. Once your teen is 15 and has finished the first 6 hours, they can take the learner permit test inside the course.

02

Get the learner license

Pass the 30-question written test (21 correct). Then visit DPS with the DE-964 (the drivers ed certificate we issue), a VOE form (school attendance form) and ID documents.

03

14 hours in the car

7 hours driving and 7 hours observing with a certified instructor. The first lesson starts somewhere quiet, then moves to busier streets as your teen is ready, including highway merging and parking.

04

30 hours of parent practice

Log 30 hours of practice with a licensed adult, 10 of them at night, using the Texas 30-hour guide from TDLR.

05

Impact Texas Teen Drivers

ITTD is the required 2-hour course about distracted driving. The certificate must be dated within 90 days of the road test. You can buy it from us for $30.

06

Road test at 16

After holding the learner license for 6 months, your teen can take the official road test at our academy, from $75.

Why Arlington parents pick us

A teen driving school where the owner still teaches.

Handing your teen the keys is a big step. Here is what makes it easier with us.

The owner teaches

The owner, Mohammad Mohsin Hassan, teaches many lessons and is a DPS-authorized examiner, so he knows exactly what the road test scores. A female instructor is available on request.

Dual-control Toyota Corolla

The instructor has a brake on the passenger side, so a first-time driver is never out of their depth.

Road test where they trained

We are a DPS-authorized third party test site. That means your teen can take the official road test here, by appointment, in a place they already know.

Open every day

We are open every day from 10 AM to 5 PM, by appointment, so lessons and tests can fit around school and sports.

Female instructor on request

Ask when you book if your teen would be more comfortable with a female instructor.

Lessons in Spanish

Lessons can be taught fully in Spanish. We speak Spanish.

Curriculum

What your teen will learn.

In the online course

  • Texas traffic laws and signs: speed limits, right of way, pavement markings, school zones
  • Defensive driving: following distance, scanning and managing space
  • Vehicle basics: controls, mirrors and dashboard warnings
  • Driver responsibility: seat belts, alcohol and drugs, Texas insurance rules
  • Emergencies and weather: blowouts, crashes and heavy rain

In the car with us

  • Neighborhood streets, school zones and busy intersections
  • Highway merging and lane changes
  • Parallel parking, backing and three-point turns
  • The same maneuvers the DPS road test scores
Ask your auto insurer whether it gives a discount for a completed driver education course.

Graduated license

The three stages of a Texas teen license.

Age 18

Full Class C license

At what age can my teen start drivers ed in Texas?
At 14. Texas lets teens begin the classroom phase at 14 and apply for a learner license at 15, once the first 6 hours of the course are done.
Is the 24-hour classroom part online or in person?
Online. The TDLR-approved 24-hour course is taken online at your teen’s own pace. The in-car hours happen in our dual-control Toyota Corolla on Arlington streets.
How much does teen drivers ed cost in Arlington?
The online course is $99, and the permit test is included. Teen Behind the Wheel (14 in-car hours) is $440. The Teen Driver Ed Full Package bundles both, plus the DE-964 certificate and parent progress updates, for $530. The DPS road test starts at $75.
How long does it take for a teen to get a license in Texas?
At least 6 months from the learner license. Teens finish the 24-hour course, hold the learner license for 6 months, complete 14 hours with an instructor plus 30 logged practice hours (10 at night), and can take the road test at 16.
Where does my teen take the written permit test?
Inside the online course. The written permit test is included in the $99 online course, the $109 parent-taught course and the $530 Full Package. After passing, your teen takes the DE-964, VOE form and ID documents to a DPS office to get the learner license card.
Can my teen take the road test at your academy?
Yes. Teens 16 and older can take the official DPS road test with us once they have the DE-964 certificate, a learner license held 6 months, a VOE form from school, and an Impact Texas Teen Drivers certificate dated within 90 days. See road test requirements.
Does my teen need the Impact Texas Teen Drivers course?
Yes. Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) is a required 2-hour course about distracted driving. The certificate must be dated within 90 days of the road test. You can buy it from us for $30.
What is the DE-964 certificate?
It is the Texas driver education certificate a TDLR-approved school issues. A DE-964 is issued after the first 6 hours so your teen can apply for the learner license, and a final DE-964 when the full program is done, for the road test.
Do you pick teens up from school or home?
Yes, inside Arlington. Pickup and drop-off is free within 5 miles of our office (the UTA campus is within this) and $15 beyond 5 miles. Pickup is only inside Arlington, so families from other cities meet us at the office on W Arkansas Ln.
